University Clinic opens at RU – RU Student Counselling Centre moves to new space

The University Clinic has opened in Uranus at Reykjavik University and will soon begin offering its services. RU’s Student Counselling Centre has also moved and begun operating in a new and attractive space in Uranus. An official opening event was held on 7 October.

With the opening of the University Clinic, students and staff at RU will have increased access to a wider range of psychological services. Master’s students in clinical psychology will provide psychological services under the supervision of experienced psychologists.

According to Bettý Ragnarsdóttir, Director of RU’s Department of Psychology’s Research and Training Centre, the University Clinic will also focus on research, including research into therapeutic interventions and other areas related to clinical psychology.

“We are delighted to now have three consultation rooms and a group supervision room for both teaching and training students in clinical psychology, as well as for the planned provision of psychological treatment for the university’s students and staff,” says Bettý.

An important setting for training psychologists

Dr. Brynja Björk Magnúsdóttir, Deputy Chair of the Department of Psychology, gave a speech at the opening of the University Clinic, saying among other things:

“For us in the Department of Psychology, this is an important milestone in the development of our programme and an opportunity to further strengthen the connection between teaching and clinical practice. The University Clinic has a dual role.

On the one hand, it provides accessible, evidence-based psychological services, and on the other, it serves as a setting for training master’s students in clinical psychology. These two roles complement each other well when the work is clearly structured and students receive good supervision.”

Brynja Björk will take over as Chair of the Department of Psychology from Dr. Kamilla Rún Jóhannsdóttir at the beginning of the new year. Kamilla Rún will then become Chair of the new Department of Neuroscience and Health Technology.

One conversation can change everything

With RU’s Student Counselling Centre now operating in its new location, students will have access to improved facilities where they can continue to receive counselling, support and assistance with various issues that may arise during their studies.

Gréta Matthíasdóttir, Director of Student Support at RU, also gave a speech at the opening event to mark the relocation of Student Counselling Centre to its new space.

“I think I can say that we at RU have always placed a strong emphasis on creating a positive atmosphere. Above all, though, we all want to do our best and offer our students the very best in teaching and services. And although the building is large, I have often heard students and others talk about the good atmosphere here – the RU spirit.

Student Counselling has been located in various places since we moved into this building in 2010. The goal, however, has always been the same: to provide professional and outstanding counselling and support so that students can thrive and succeed in their studies.

Professional facilities are very important, even though the content and the work itself are what everything revolves around. One conversation can change everything. Every one of us matters, and that is something we want to emphasise. We encourage students to make use of the service.

With this new space, we are therefore not simply opening new facilities where accessibility, privacy and a welcoming environment have been taken into consideration. We are strengthening a service centred on people, wellbeing, participation and achievement,” said Gréta.
